The alien cylinder is the first physical artifact exchanged between the human Ryland Grace and the unknown occupants of the Blip-A, marking the transition from passive observation to active communication. Delivered with deliberate care, the cylinder carries not only a message but also the environmental signature of its creators, and its contents provide the breakthrough that allows Grace to understand who he is dealing with and why they are both at Tau Ceti.

Delivery and First Impressions

The cylinder arrives after Grace initiates a tentative signal by firing his own engines in a brief, low-power burst. The Blip-A responds by matching his velocity and then, using a hull-mounted robot with five articulated arms, gently releases a cylindrical object toward the Hail Mary. The robot releases the cylinder with a slight end-over-end rotation at a velocity of 8.6 centimeters per second—the exact speed Grace had imparted to his own ship during his signal. This precise matching of velocity is a clear sign of intent and accommodation. Grace, wearing his Orlan-MKS2 EVA suit, catches the cylinder as it floats into his arms. It is about the size and shape of a coffee can, with a dull gray color and darker gray splotches, and it has less mass than he expected, suggesting it is hollow.
